Hi Time4Printing customers, fans, and viewers.  We have been told again and again that we should have a blog so . . .  here it is.  We will be posting many things on here including:

  • Tips for printing and designed materials,
  • Current challenges that people are facing to help some customers with the same challenges who do not want to ask questions,
  • General business tips and suggestions including networking, ethics, sales & marketing, etc.,
  • Product information to help answer some regular questions that we receive,
  • As well as some overall, what we would hope to be, helpful information . . .

Education, New Technology, New Products, Staying ahead of the competition!!! WooHoo!!

We recently attended a large convention in New Orleans (just a side note, if you haven’t been to New Orleans… I highly recommend checking it out. It truly is like its own island.) where we were on the search to learn more about 3 specific machines.  As we went through the aisles of vendors it’s amazing how we are constantly reminded of all the different possibilities in the printing industry.

A couple HUGE take-aways from the show for me… as a business owner and for my clients that we are trying to help succeed in their own businesses….

  1. Be different but don’t re-create the wheel.  It’s important to have a “look & feel” for your business and to be sure that people can spot you out of a crowd. As with many conventions that anyone goes to… you typically bring back bags (or in our cases, boxes) of STUFF to sort through and do research on.  There are so many samples and ‘things’ in these boxes that I don’t know which manufacturer they came from.  How does this help me? How does this help the company that is trying to sell to me? IT DOESN’T!  Be sure that you name, at the very least, appears on EVERYTHING that you hand out to a customer or potential client.  They may not need the product or service now but in 6 months when they happen to come across you marketing piece… they will know who it came from.
  2. It’s VERY important to stay on top of new technologies and equipment in your industry.  We are the only printing company in the Lakes Region area that makes a point to attend at least 2 LARGE conventions a year.  We do this because it allows us to stay ahead of our competition with new software, inks, printers, technologies, trends, and ideas.  You should be the most knowledgeable person about your industry in your area.  When a client asks me a question about a product that their office is getting in California, or China… I want to be knowledgeable and educated on that product so that I can help my client with ANYTHING they need to help their business get noticed and remembered.
  3. Know your competition but NEVER talk bad about them… especially to a potential client.  We know who our competition is, we know their capabilities and we know their downfalls.  Use this in your marketing efforts in a smart way… not in a vindictive way.  Walking around the show comparing a few manufacturers against each other the largest turn off is when someone is not trying to sell me on their product or telling me the benefits of their products but instead sits there for 20 minutes telling me everything negative about their competition.  This works on multiple levels.  In the last few weeks we have had a few customers change all their printing to us with the reasoning that their current printer is not focusing on bettering their relationship with their clients but instead bashing the competition.  This is a huge negative for the client. It normally also tells clients that you are threatened or scared of your competition.  Always be the bigger person, this will go a long way.  Truth, honesty, and ethics will work out at the end of the day.

Taking your business seriously

Now… I am the first one to say: Branding and image is not EVERYTHING that is important to make your business succeed HOWEVER… Banding and image do play a large role in the perception of what people think about your business before they even know what you do.

Your Logo: Keep it Simple and Clean – use it on everything and keep it the same.  I see so many companies who change their image on every piece of marketing material they pass out.  The brochures, postcards, gift cards, rack cards, even their business cards… they all have a different color, look & feel, and variation of their logo.  Being sure your “Brand” is consistent in everything you do.

Look & Feel: Modern, Elegant, Edgy, Traditional, Retro, Bright, “Green”… These are all different images that your company can represent.  It is very important to also keep these consistent.  It is ok to do a themed promotion or ad… however your “look & feel” of your business should always be consistent on your standard marketing materials.

The overall lesson should be that the perception of your business is reality in your prospects minds.  If your company is perceived as a good VALUE the reality of your prospect turning into clients is high.  Perception starts with Image!

Business Cards – The Important Truth!!

I love going to networking events. Not only is it where about 60% of our NEW business comes from but it is also the opportunity for us to see what our competitors are giving their customers and passing off as business cards.  At Time4Printing we consider the “Business Card” to be a “Firm Handshake”.  There is no second chance to get it right.  Just like the handshake – serious, sturdy, 1st impression.

Just think . . .  Have you ever had that person come up to you and you go to shake their hand and their hand literally melts into you hand and you don’t want to grab it because you almost feel like you are going to break it . . I am SURE you ALL know what I am talking about.  What is your impression of this person . . . Not serious? Dainty? Weak? Not Successful? Not Professional?  We all take it a different way however I am sure that there is not real Positive way to take this.

Now just think . . . The person who gives you a business card that feels like copy paper or has those torn edges . . . (Again, Everyone knows the people I am talking about) I bet you are getting a very similar impression of this person as you did of the weak handshake.

Your Business Card is one of the MOST IMPORTANT things that you have!!

Your card should represent YOU, Your Company, your Professionalism, your Creativity, and your Quality!  It should NOT have too much information on it as the real truth behind the business card is to enable contact and leave a good impression.  The more information on your card the less your card will actually be read and absorbed.
